Read the name again. X · DE.

DE is not a random pair of characters. It is the ISO code for Germany: the suffix on every German licence plate abbreviation in international traffic, the country code in every VAT number, every IBAN, every shipping label, every customs form, every domain in Europe’s largest economy.

Put an X in front of it, and you have a name that says something rather specific without saying anything at all: X, across Germany. X, out of Germany. X, into Europe.

And it says it on .eu, the only extension that belongs to the whole single market and to no country inside it.

Anyone can register a name today. Nobody can register a registration history. There are exactly 17,576 possible three-letter combinations. Not seventeen thousand available. Seventeen thousand that exist, in total, in any extension, for as long as the Latin alphabet does.

In .eu they have been fully allocated for years, and no new ones are ever created. Share issues expand. Land gets built on. Longer domains exist in the billions. Three-letter domains are a closed set, which is why investors treat them as an asset class rather than as websites.

What makes the .eu pool interesting is that it is younger and less exhaustively picked over than .com, while sitting on top of a market of 450 million consumers. Short .eu domains change hands rarely, and quietly.

Why .eu is a strategy rather than a fallback

Most alternative extensions are apologies for a .com you could not get. .eu is not one of them, because it does something no other extension can:

That last line is quietly powerful. .eu requires the holder to be based in the European Union. What XDE can stand for

An initialism with no fixed meaning is not an empty name. It is a container, and this one comes with several sensible fillings:

In trademark filings. An initialism with no descriptive character is the textbook case for a registrable word mark. Generic terms fail that test routinely. Acronyms do not.

Questions buyers ask

Is an acronym without a meaning too thin for a brand? IBM, BMW, SAP, DHL, UBS, BASF. Almost nobody can expand those letters any more, and it has never cost a single one of them a customer. Is .eu credible for a serious company? It is operated by the European Union’s own registry, restricted to EU-established holders, and used across the union by companies, institutions and retailers.
